*FICTION* I was going through all the messages and chats we had shared just a month back. How things change I wonder!! Re-reading them was like going through many emotions. Those lines still gave me the same smile, same laughter the way they had given me a month before or so. Though yes, this time, those were accompanied by a li'l sadness and a wish. A part of me still wished if it could be continued, if we could take it further. A wish that at least it should not have ended so abruptly like this. He thought for a while and thought about calling her. Perhaps he could change this. There was no point in continuing but he was feeling a turbulence inside him. He had always felt something different about her. After his previous relationship which ended on a bitter note, he came across somebody different. The reason why they became friends and then why he chose to end everything were unknown to him. It started all of a sudden and then ended. He knew he had his 'be prac...

Shoe Laces

Image
*FICTION* ‘Hi’ Nandita greeted Sanjay as she came home. “God these shoe laces!” .He said without actually responding to Nandita and continued, “You know, every 10 minutes or so, I had to kept tying and re-tying them. How do people wear sport shoes?” For a moment Nandita was surprised at him. How could he think of laces at a time like this? “Sanjay… Dhruv these days…” “Dhruv … where is he?” interrupted Sanjay”. I had been thinking of him all through the way”. “Yeah… I too was…” “He is my son. Yet he is pretty good with these shoe-laces” he interrupted her once again. This time Nandita was about to lose her temper as he continued “You taught him right, didn’t you?” “Yes … He is your son. Do you even know…....” “Five minutes, Nandita… Let me just have a shower”. This time she barely controlled her anger. How could he be so casual, she thought to herself. “Towel…” He shouted from the bathroom. As Nandita handed him the towel, he continue...

The Stranger

*FICTION* Last Saturday, I was at British council, New Delhi  center.  I had gone there to collect my certificate. The receptionist told me that my teacher would arrive in an hour and only then I could collect my certificate so I went to the Charbagh there to spend my time. Since all the tables were occupied (yes there is a good sitting arrangement too), I sat at one of the slabs surrounding a fountain which is there in the middle of Charbagh. I assumed it was a pleasant day but the wind was dry and temperature not as low as I had expected. There were people sitting on the other slabs too. As it was a dry day, I scooped some water on my palm from the fountain. Freshness surrounded me so I kept doing it again and again. After a few minutes I realized a girl was observing me. She was beautiful. I wanted to stare at her for a few more minutes but I did not want to look like an idiot. So I averted my eyes and then moved to the area where there is a sculpture. Th...

"Again you are scribbling..Can't you put your nose off your books and papers for sometime?" my mother snaps at me as I scribble a poem. "Oh ma! Atleast listen to what I wrote" "Hmm...tell" "Ahmm ahmm" I pretend to clear my throat and My mum laughs back. "Will you open your mouth or should I go back to kitchen?" "Oh!No-no please!" I say quickly and grab her by elbow. Who doesn't want audience? ;) Listen," Life's unpredictable, Can't say when it would take a turn. We can't really say, When life might be deprived of all fun. It's true, What elders say, You should know to walk alone; No matter  Come what may. She smiles and looks at me for some time curiously. "You write well and what you've written is indeed true."...

Reaction.......

Image
*FICTION* She looked at her face which had grown dark in color...."tanning", she told herself and thought, "How long it has been since I looked at myself in mirror." She looked at her hair which had grown a good-length in the last four months and the split-tends which splurged through her hair. It had been six months since she had gone for a hair cut... She looked at the face-wash and moisturizer which had been lying unused for the months then and a sunscreen lotion which she had not bothered to replace with cold cream for winters. "Where have I lost myself? Infact, have I really lost myself?? If yes, where?" the thoughts kept daunting her while she was still looking in the mirror. The way she is, she tried to push her thoughts back and made her way out of wash-room although this wasn't something that was going to leave her and she too knew that. Something caught her from behind and she had to look back, she didn't know what was tha...

She thought about the dream again and re-read the email several times from her mind. She felt like crying. For a moment she wanted to call her Dad but then decided against it. Tobermory - My version!

Most of us have read the short story,  ‘Tobermory’  by British author, Hector Hugh Munro (Saki) . As part of a small creative writing course that I had taken, we were asked to pen down a 600-word first person narrative by any character of the story ‘Tobermory’. I have chosen to be a guest at the party. I am standing at the Basement hall of Green Lounge party hall where Lady Blemely has thrown her party. The party is boring, most of the guests are old, food is okay and there is absolutely nothing that allures me to stay. In short, I am leaving. Although Mr. Appin has made all attempts to make this party interesting by announcing that he can make animals talk and his first pupil is none other than Lady Blemely’s own pet, Tobermory, but who doesn’t know him and his poor gimmicks. So I make my way to exit but I hear a female voice calling me from behind. “Hey handsome! Leaving so early?” I am astonished at this sensuous voice as up till now, I didn’t encounter any you...

Imagining the worst.

These days I am trying writing. I have tried a very Small fiction .  Please excuse me for any improper grammar or vocab, in case you find some :-) “Put it on silent” ordered Mrs. Mathur as she talked to a friend over the phone.  Preeti didn’t say anything. Instead she threw the remote on the bed and left the room. Mrs Mathur saw the rebellious streak yet again but kept her cool and continued her telephone conversation. She and Preeti were not on talking terms for a week now. As she hung up, she went to her room and knocked. “Who is it” Preeti said sharply, fully aware that only the two were home. “Open the door, Preeti. You know it’s me”. “What do you want?” furiously she asked as she swung open the door a minute later. Before Mrs. Mathur could utter a word, she slammed the door hard behind her and shut herself in drawing room. Mrs. Mathur wanted to shake her but she knew that things would only get worse if she did anything then so she went to kitc...

Her Hair-Story....

*FICTION* H is 29. On 12 th of this September, she will be 30. Still unmarried, she never even had a boy-friend. Having born to a conservative family where it has been like a vow taken by family to stick their old beliefs and stubborn enough to ignore anything new, it would have been a crime worse than murder to have a boy-friend. But then, she also didn't want to have one. Never been a person of sure-shot confidence, She graduated when she was 21, then did a post graduation certificate course in women studies, all from correspondence  and then sat at home because girls in her family are supposed to “not do a job”.  Not that it was because of apparent hair-loss, but a general acceptance of a family culture, according to which it was time to look for a groom. Letting a girl out of house for a”job” would have resulted in lesser no. of proposals in a conservative society like hers. But it was never a matter to think about for H. It was another right thing that her...
